WILLIAM WHITEHEAD Will
In the name of God Amen.
I, WILLIAM WHITEHEAD of the County of Halifax and State of North
Carolina, being here the abundant mercy and goodwill of God, of perfect sense,
mind and memory, thanks be to that laudable being that calling to mind that
notability of this my present transitory state of existence, knowing that it is
appointed for man once to die do make. I
ordain this to be my Last Will and testament, and desire it to be received by
all as such. In promise; I give my body
to the earth from whence it was taken, I also give my soul to God, from whom
it originally sprung, as for my burial that it at the discretion of my beloved
Wife. ITEM; I give unto my beloved Wife, PEGGY WHITEHEAD, in money; Seven Pounds, Ten Shillings, Virginia money. Also I lend unto my beloved Wife, PEGGY WHITEHEAD, One negro Woman named SALL, ( to which
I give Negro. I desire to be set free at my Wife's decease ) One Boy being
called LIGHTFOOT, one gray horse called Romona, two beds and furniture, three cows and
calves, one sow and pigs, one large pine chest, one black walnut table, one
safe, one lapboard, one half of the pewter, one pot, one pan, six sitting chairs,
one half the crockery ware, one half my cider barrels, two paddles and duck,
one ham and one half my Plantation utensils, one loom and gear. ITEM; I lend unto my beloved Wife during her
natural life, part of my land and Plantation
whereon I now live. Beginning at a
Willow Oak in Looking Glass Swamp, then up the Branch that divides the two new
Grounds, to the head of said Branch, from there to an old well in the Cherry
Orchard, then South to the Halifax Road, then down the Road to fork, then East
to RUTLINE'S lanes, then along RUTLINE'S,
to the said Swamp, then up said Swamp to the first station, Containing One Hundred and Fifty Three acres
more or less. ITEM; I give unto my beloved Wife Fifteen Hundred
Weight fat pork, and Fifty barrels of corn.
ITEM; I give and bequeath unto my
Son ABRAM WHITEHEAD, the remaining
part of my land and Plantation at my decease, and at my Wife's decease that
part I have lent her, and the tracts of land that I am now possessed of, of
which is all adjoining to the above mentioned lands, to him and his heirs and
assigns forever, Containing Four Hundred Fifty Nine acres. ITEM;
I give and bequeath unto my Son, ABRAM WHITEHEAD, one negro fellow named
LUKE, one Boy named JIM, Two beds and furniture, one stile Capacorn,
tub and pitcher, one Gum table, one half of my cedar crocks, one desk, the
black walnut table, one half the crockery ware, half the pewter, two mares, two
cows and calves, two sows and pigs, two saddles and bridles, six chairs, one
half my Plantation utensils, one pine table, to him, his heirs or assigns
forever. ITEM; I give to be sold at public sale the
remaining part of my horses, cattle and hogs and the money thence arising to pay
my just debts. ITEM; I give to be equally divided my children,
WILLIAM, ALLEN, JOHN and ABRAM
WHITEHEAD, MARY MOORE and PENELOPE PITMAN the following Negroes to witt, JEFF, JUDE, PETER, DAK, HARRY, VARTEL & HANNER,
and all the property ( except the
land ) that I have lent my Wife and at her decease, to them and their heirs and
assigns forever. I have heretofore given
my Three eldest Sons, Lands and negroes, also my Daughters I have given them
negroes, I just mention this to show the reason that there is no special legacy
mentioned in this Will for the above mentioned Children. Lastly I appoint my Son, ABRAM WHITEHEAD,
executor of this my Last Will and Testament. Witness my hand and seal this 28th
day March 1802.
