WILLIAM T. JOSEY deceased,    Petition to sell Slaves.    Court of pleas & Quarters

Northampton County, North Carolina                                    December Term 1860

 

            To the Worshipful, The Justice of said Court: The Petition of  W.W. PEEBLES, administrator of WILLIAM T. JOSEY, deceased, respectfully showeth with your Worships, That he qualifies as administrator of the said WILLIAM T. JOSEY at the March Term 1860 of this Court. Your petitioner further showeth that from the best information and knowledge which he is able to obtain, The debts due from the deceased amount to about Fourteen Thousand Dollars, and he is of the opinion that the charges of the administration will amount to about Twelve Hundred Dollars. Now petitioner further showeth that the debts aforesaid cannot be discharged by the money on hand at the death of the said intestate and the perishable property belonging to his Estate.

            Now petitioner further showeth that at the time of his death the said intestate possessed the following Slaves, to wit, DORSEY, age 24 years, AMY, age about 20 years, JIM, about 3 years, WINNEY, about 50 years, ANNELIUS, about 3 years, ANTHONY, about 35 years, DANIEL, about 26 years, SAM, about 19 years, RIDDICK, about 36 years, BEN. about 40 years, ELLEN, about 8 years, JOHN, about 7 years, All in possession making Twelve.

            Your petitioner further showeth that a sale of all of said Negro Slaves is necessary for him to pay the debts of his intestate and the charges of the administration. Your petitioner therefore prays your Worships for a license to sell said Slaves for the purpose of paying the debts of his intestate and the charges of administration aforesaid. And your petitioner will ever pray.

            Report of sale of Slaves made by the petitioner to March Court 1862. In these case wherein was filed at the December Term 1860.

            To the Worshipful, the Justice of the Court of Pleas and Quarters for the County of Northampton: The petitioner would respectfully make the following report. After more than twenty days an advertisement at the Courthouse door in the Town of Jackson and more than four other places in said County, he attended at Rich Square, the place of sale on the 27th December 1860, and offered at public auction to the highest bidder, on a credit of six mounts of the Slaves in the petition mentioned when and where the following persons became the last and highest bidders for the said Slaves, in the following sums, to wit;

            At the time of said sale the following four Slaves in the petition mentioned abscounded, which after a like advertisement as before, I sold on the aforesaid terms at Rich Square, to the following persons on the 26th day of January 1861, for the following sums.

                                                                                                                 Total $9174.00

            The whole amount of sale is $9174.00, of which amount $5701 draw interest from the 27th June 1861, and $3473, Draw interest from the 26th Jul 1861. All of said purchases conformed with the terms of sale by entering in bonds with good security, wherever four your petitioner executed to the Bills of Sale.

            The report is made to March Court 1862, further time till then having been granted the petitioner by the Court for that purpose.
