MARTHA JOSEY DOWER
State of North Carolina. To the sheriff of Northampton County
Greeting, whereas MARTHA JOSEY, Widow of WILLIAM JOSEY lately dec'd, having no
Last Will & Testament, praying the Court to order a Jury, free holders,
good & lawful men unconnected with the parties to allot & set apart to
her Dower, out of the lands of her deceased Husband. These are therefore to command you the said
Sheriff to summon a Jury to go upon the premises, who after being duly
qualified, together with the County Surveyor, proceed to allot & set apart
to the said petitioner MARTHA JOSEY, Widow, to wit; Dower in the lands of said
dec'd, including the Dwelling house & out houses, according to act of
assembly, in such case made & provided & from under their hands &
seals make report to September Term next of this Court, herein fail not. Witness WILLIAM BOTTOM clk; Issued 20th June 1837.

order. I, JOHN
B. ODOM, Deputy Sheriff of Etheldred. I, J. PEEBLES Sheriff of the County aforesaid
on the 17th of August A.D. 1837,
attended by the following Jury to wit;
ROBERT BAUM, BYNUM
WORRICK, BLAKE BRYANT,
THOMAS BRYANT, JAMES VAUGHAN, EDWIN
BOON, WILLIAM JENKINS, EXUM OUTLAND,
EVERT MUGET, BENJAMIN WARD
& EPHRAIM GRIFFITH, freeholders unconnected with MARTHA
JOSEY, Widow & relict of WILLIAM
JOSEY dec'd. & entirely disinterested by me duly summoned, came in proper
person to a certain tract or parcel of land whereof the said WILLIAM JOSEY
dec'd, seized & possessed, lying & being in the County aforesaid
containing Six Hundred & Ninety Five acres. And the freeholders aforesaid
being duly sworn & requested to lay off, allot, & assign, to the said
MARTHA JOSEY, One Third part of said tract or parcel of land; did lay off,
allot, & assign to her the said MARTHA JOSEY, the part or portion of the
said partition, included & comprised in the following limits &
bounders, to wit; Beginning at corner
White Oak near the gate & running S. 58 W. 115 poles, up the avenue to
corner Red Oak of THOMAS PEELES line, thence N.76-E.271 1/2 poles to White Oak,
thence S. 84 E.69 poles to corner Holley, thence due S. 74 poles to LIGHTFOOT'S
Red Oak, thence N.88 E.150 poles to a lane, thence N.84 E.62 poles to two
corner White Oaks, thence due N.134 poles to corner White Oak, thence N.77
W.214 poles to corner Pine, thence S.& W.58 poles to the first station,
containing Two Hundred & Thirty One acres & Two Thirds, including the
dwelling house & all the out houses, buildings & improvements thereon
belonging; which being done, I the said JOHN B. ODOM being the Sheriff, also
County surveyor & the Jurors aforesaid, put the said MARTHA JOSEY, Widow
& exec. in possession of the same. Given under our hands &
seals the day & year first above written. ( The
above Jurors signed along with a diagram drawing of the surveyed land)
This diagram
represents Two Hundred & Thirty One & 2/3 acres of land allotted to
MARTHA JOSEY, as her Dower out of lands of her deceased Husband ,WILLIAM JOSEY,
beginning at a corner White Oak on the West side of Plantation near the gate on
avenue & running up the avenue S 58 W 145 poles to Thomas Peeles corner Red Oak, thence W 76 E 271 1/2 poles to White
Oak, thence S 84 E 69 poles to a corner Holly, thence due S 74 poles to LIGHTFOOT's corner Red Oak, thence N 88 E 150 poles to a
lane, thence N 84 E 62 poles to two corner Post Oaks, thence due N 134 poles to
corner White Oak, thence N 77 W 214 poles to corner Pine, & thence running
S/W 58 poles to the first station. including the
dwelling house & out houses &C. laid off August
17th 1837
